New UFC light heavyweight champion Daniel Cormier returned to his role as co-host of “UFC Tonight” earlier this week, just days after besting Anthony Johnson for the title.
Cormier is a former standout college wrestler who went on to compete in the Olympics, but the idea of being called “UFC champion” is one that tops it all.
“It’s the most amazing thing I’ve ever experienced, outside of my kids,” he said. “It’s something you dream about, but you never know if you’re going to accomplish it.”
After surviving an early onslaught by Johnson, “DC” was able to control the rest of the fight before locking up a submission. Following the announcement, Johnson placed the belt around the waist of the new champion.
“I just want to say thank you Anthony Johnson. You see many guys win and then the belt is put around the waist by Dana White. Johnson did that and made my time special,” he said. “I thank him for being the classy guy he is. I said a lot of good things about him before the fight.”
The night, though, wasn’t all perfect for Cormier. During the post-fight press conference, Ryan Bader stormed the scene and demanded a title shot. The two were scheduled to meet before UFC officials moved Cormier into the championship match after the suspension of Jon Jones.
“I don’t quite understand – you give a guy his moment,” he said. “Ryan, you deserve the shot at the belt, but there are better ways to do it. He thinks I ducked him. He was sent to New Orleans to get beat up by me in my home state. But don’t come to the press conference. Why would I be afraid of him?
“I’d love to compete against Jones again. If it’s Bader, it’s Bader. He’s won four in a row, but he hasn’t beaten the best four guys.”
